| subject: | Re: ATM converting to MS XP OS |
From: "James Lerch" To: "ATM List" Reply-To: "James Lerch" As much as I hate to admit this (being employed by a company that exclusively makes large Unix servers and a few workstations, and the OS to run on the hardware.) I really like Win-XP. XP does have some problems with DOS programs. Specifically DOS programs that try and draw their own graphics. For instance, TEX.exe works fine, as long as I don't run the Monte Carlo sim or display the surface error graph (then it locks up). Figure45 and Suiter's Admir wont run at all (their entirely DOS graphic in nature). Now what gets weird is, on SOME XP machines they will run, sometimes without problems, sometimes with odd graphics, sometimes only after seriously tweaking XP's graphic and DOS emulation settings... Heading off into non-ATM land, I also should mention one more thing to think about, Old Hardware. I have an ancient flatbed scanner and one of the first generation cheap Cannon laser printers (real laser printer, no ink, just toner), and neither will work under XP. I leave these two items attached to an old 300mhz Win98 machine and just access them over the network. Just food for thought......
