| subject: | Australian USR Courier x2 upgrades |
RB>> Modems upgraded onsite at USRobotics Pty Ltd RB>> 473 - 479 Victoria Street RB>> West Melbourne 3003 RB>> Victoria RB>> Australia SL> SL>> Having to send the modem to Victoria is a bit of a pain. I wish SL>> USR would subcontract somebody here in NSW to do the upgrades. SL>> Oh well, might as well wait for the ITU standard to arrive SL>> before I upgrade. PC>> There's no reason why anyone should be sending their modem anywhere, PC>> This sucks big time. SL> You bet. The very reason for having a flash ROM is to avoid having to SL> send the modem anywhere for firmware upgrades! If USR Australia insists SL> on a return to base (in Melbourne) policy for the 56k upgrades, I might SL> as well go and buy a Rockwell 56k modem. One reason you have to send it back would br the Austel Regulation that states that: WARNING Current Austel regulations do not permit end users to modify their modems in any way if the modem is to be connected to any cable which is part of the PSTN. This applies even if you are leasing a pair from any telephone company. It is only legal for a user to perform any modification if the whole of the path between the two modems is not associated with the PSTN, otherwise, the modification must be performed by the manufacturer.
