  I remember when I was a kid in high school that I saw what later became
  the M-16 in a rifle that was .308 , in one of the gun books. I think it is
  now probably the Ar-10 . It was an Armalite rifle that looked a lot like
  the M-16. I fired my first M-16 a few years later and was really
  disappointed. They had taken a good design and put it into a .223 cal and
  a "Its made by Mattel, its swell" plastic stock. I think I would like
  shooting the M-16 if it were in a decently heavier caliber. I have had
  several chances to buy Ar15's at pretty reasonable prices, but passed them
  up because I don't like that little caliber except in bolt action varmint
  guns with big scopes.
