Using the encoder wheel will provide feedback to the microprocessor of how fast the motor is turning. It will also keep track of where the drive is if you include that part into the software. You can also provide a simple D/A convertor with a few outputs of the microprocessor to do some control of the motor if you so desire so that it can still slew at the fastest rate for moving to another object but don't drop the voltage too low when tracking or the motor will tend to work too hard.
