HM>>>> THAT's a fairly generous statement on USR's part. From
HM>>>> memory, they fixed the bug where Rockwell couldn't
HM>>>> connected at 33600 (or 3429 symbol rate, specifically) to
HM>>>> USR; there was never any sign that this wasn't USR's fault,
HM>>>> and since Rockwell to Rockwell worked fine, it might as
HM>>>> well have been USR's fault .. :-)

DD>>> If enough modems make the same error, does that make the
DD>>> error a standard? Remember the Netcomm modems of a few years
DD>>> back? Had no problems with other Netcomms....

HM>> Yes, but there are more Rockwell modems than NetComms -- and
HM>> more than USRs even.

DD>>Still doesn't make it the documented standard.

LD> Umm.. your not going to give in on this one are you?

LD> There was a message from a Supra tech to a USR tech about a
LD> year ago which described the problem. Their opinion was that
LD> USR must have had a different interpretation of the V.34
LD> specs by choosing 3200 instead of the 3429 symbol rate when
LD> presented with the particular set of values in the INFO
 LD> sequences.

LD> There was a rumor going around that USR was protecting
LD> against the early Rockwell V.34 chip revision which had
LD> problems at the 3429 symbol rate.

LD> Supra and others changed their firmware to work with USR
LD> modems, USR then changed their firmware to work with the rest
 LD> of the Rockwells.

LD> I'm not sure if Rockwell themselves have made any changes to
 LD> their stock code.

LD> Everyone can now interoperate except unmodified Rockwells
LD> calling Austel Couriers, as they still use the old USR
 LD> firmware.

LD> I would have to agree with Hamish on this, if it is a problem
LD> with the interpretation of the standard then given the state
LD> of the modem world it should be up to USR to fix it.

Not SO!!!!
I have 5 USR Couriers and a USR Sportster
and recently bought a Rockwell Voice/Fax/Modem/Speakerphone

Now the story is that I can call any USR modem successfully with the Rockwell
BUT I CANT CALL ANY BLOODY ROCKWELL MODEMS AT ALL.
This Rockwell WILL not negotiate with another Rockwell at all (just sits
there sqealing)
and yet it negotiated with ANY USR that I have called and connects imediately.
