ADSL (Asymetric Digital Subscriber Line) gives high speed digital
connections over twisted pair. It's said to be able to give around 6 mbit/s
downstream over a kilometre of twisted pair from a router at the exchange
to the subscriber's premises (Some vendors claim only 1.5 Mbps). Upstream
is dramatically slower - one vendor is only claiming 64 kbpps.

Typically it needs an ADSL "modem" at the customer end to connect
via Ethernet to the customer's equipment.
