I have used the same technique that Bob is talking about, just pour the
dental stone over the tiles, wait for it to cure, seal the edges and back
and start grinding away.
I wanted to see if NOT cleaning the dental stone between the tiles would
result in scratches and it doesn't. I brought my surface down to 5 mic. and
not a single scratch and no suction problem either. I also make sure I used
distilled water for both my mic. powders and polishing compound.
By the way you can put the polishing pads right on the tiles after your
done grinding.
