Yep, plaster does go off a lot faster than most realize the first time
around.  I've just put a warning on my plaster tool article so that those
that foloow my page will, at the least, have heard that the stuff is fast
setting.
It acts smooth and soft for a while and then it suddenly starts to be
thicker and that is when you have about 10 seconds to finish up, if even
that long.
I'll note tho that first timers often also feel that their work isn't good
and often may throw away a tool that is more than good enough or can be
made so with just a little repiar.  Bad castings can also be used as the
backing for a good tool if you rough up the face of the old casting a
