PH> G'day fellow BBS users,
PH> I purchased a Netcomm SmartModem M34F some 6 months ago, I'd like
PH> to know if it's capable of being upgraded to 33k6 easily/cheaply
PH> (ROM upgrade?) or would it be more cost effective to buy a new one?
PH> It's a SmartModem M34F model SM3400 REN=1 Ser No 527100981
PH> Basically I'm happy with it, it generally connects to similar
PH> modems at 28k8 but to the PCUGMAIL BBS for some reason it won't do
PH> better than 26k4. Although to the PCUGIBM BBS it will do 28k8 more
PH> often than not. Lines or init string, not sure, tried those quoted
PH> here for it...
PH> Cheers, Peter H.

Hello there mate,
I had my M34F upgraded by bringing it back to their North Ryde Head Office
in NSW, cost was $75, get a R/A number, post/or take onsite, be ready in a
week mate, also for win95, to take advantage of 33k6 need their win95 netcomm
modem drivers, as they have a description of Netcomm Smartmodem M34 (33600)
Enhanced or whatever, only say 60kB.
Alternatively they have a site on the net, www.netcomm.com.au visit that
Or ring them up, using Telstra 013
I personally have not found much benefit as to get 33600 it has to be near
perfect line, it relies mainly on line rather than any benefit in new
technology, most people find that they can only get on at the best at 31200
Cable modems are the way to go, last year in Comdex in the U.S they were
demonstrating 56000 bps modem, which is close to the new Telstra 56Kbps
cable modem service which should be introduced in 1997 having a $800 yearly
fee or so,
Hope this info helps mate !
