G'day Chris!

TW>> why, when I upgrade my machine and the OS, the performance is
TW>> measurably worse and less stable in the extreme.

 CH> Shouldn't be like that.

I'd love to agree with ye... really I would. But the damn thing seems to
crash even when it is doing _absolutely_ nothing. I've come home to find
the computer sitting on a trap, and there was _no_ scheduled activity at
all during the period I was away.

CH> You don't mention doing the standard tweaks for memory-minimal
CH> systems, or what your video setup is.

I've tweaked a few things here n' there, mostly as I did for 2.1. Unless a
parameter or three reacts differently to the prior version, I'd expect
similar response. I'll post my Config.sys next message for ye to ponder.

I don't doubt there's room for improvement in there, with things I tweaked
until bored or frustrated, still not having found the ideal setting.
Frustration seems to be a major part of my computing lifestyle atm... :)

Video is a bog standard trident, using the driver supplied with Warp.

CH> The video is usually the culprit, just like Windoze.

The video is slowing my system down, I know, but surely no more than under
2.1. I was thinking of looking for an accelerator card, but VLB makes it
more trouble than `tis worth I suspect. I'll probably hold out for a whole
new box and hope a Psomething improves things a whole lot. It'll definitely
make the memory situation a bit more palatable...

TW>> And as for the fixpaks,
 CH> Which one?

I think it was 22, but it didn't seem to say that outright. The filename
was something like XR_022.DK?, but I can't look it up right this instant
because my CD failed to come up after my last crash. (Hopefully, that wee
problem will right itself next time I reboot... )

TW>> The usual "un-install the bits you don't need" doesn't seem to
TW>> apply either. I've just recently re-installed the TCP stuff and
TW>> things actually got a little faster. Go figure?

CH> This _is_ strange. The network drivers are a real resource hog, and I
CH> would expect things to degrade with them active.

So I've heard, although this wee problem may've been of my own making. I
didn't completely remove the TCP stuff, just REMmed it out of the
config.sys, so perhaps I left something loose in there that was slowing
things down looking for the rest of the TCP set. Anyway, there was a
definite improvement in speed returning to the prompt after I put it back
in...

Another obvious point, which I am aware of, is that I'm now running
software which I never evaluated under 2.1, such as the IAK and netscape/2,
and a whole host of other net software, much of it less than reputable
freeware. :) But this doesn't account for the number of crashes I suffer,
nor the fact that the whole system goes belly up. I also get a lot of
"so n' so has stopped responding to system blah blah press enter to
end it", and no amount of entering will kill the problem task. Apart
from always being a GUI problem, I can see no other common denominator.

have fun
I will not fake my way through life.
