Did you ever play `Colossal Caves' ?  A text adventure exploring a 
treasure cave system, written for early Unix systems ?

There's a story about a student who'd played for 20 hours on a 
library monitor and was nearly at the final treasure when "A dwarf 
jumps out and kills you with his dagger"...

Said student is said to have stood up, carefully parked his 
keyboard **inside** the monitor before leaving the library in an 
icy fury...

I reflect on this tale in times of stress, and put the log- 
splitter back..
