The ying/yang pattern sounds like the classic sign of an internal stress
problem. You could confirm that in a trice by checking the mirror with
polarising film in bright light. Stresses show up as dark spots. You
rotated the mirror, did you try a different orientation or mount? Is the
back of the mirror clean and flat?
Have you tried to polish it out? What affect did that have?
