Type I, which I have, is caused by one of two ways... your pancreas was
traumatized or surgically altered and can no longer produce insulin
(rare) or by an autoimmune response where your body decides to attack
the pancreas and kill the Islet cells that produce insulin or the
insulin itself (more common). I have type one and have antibodies that
attack the insulin and the islet cells. There are two tests to tell if
you are type 1 or 2 that are run on the same blood draw... the GABA-65
(antibody test) and the C-peptide marker test.
If you are taking insulin a lab can tell your insulin from injected
insulin by measuring how many insulin crystals have a C-Peptide
marker... the synthesized insulin you inject does not have any C-Peptide
in it as it is more pure than what your body makes.
The GABA-65 measures if you have antibodies (which my body has an
astronomic amount of them).
I was misdiagnosed as a type II but had Ketoacidosis which is very rare
for a type II... they ran the GABA and found out that my diabetic doc
called it wrong... took me off the pills and put me on the insulin and I
had an instant health improvement.
