Thanks paul.  I ftp'd this on your recommendation.  It does look promising
and some of the features are quite nice.  At the moment it does seem to be
having a bit of trouble getting a ppp seesion started properly, I'm sure
it's only a matter of fiddling till I get it right.  I also noticed that
some programs (like UltiMail) can't detect that there is a connection, I
suspect this is related to my problems with session negotiation.
