I actually saw the genesis of the song, and then heard the
filksong a few months later. This all took place at cons in Michigan
sometime during the mid '80s-- probably Confusion, Contraption,
Conclave, or (conceivably) Babelcon. I was in high school at the
time, and while I didn't know any of the people involved, I went to a
lot of filksings. Apparently, the fellow had gotten a good deal on a
high quality guitar because of its unusual color. (I seem to recall
classing it as blue myself, but I tend to think of most
aqua/teal/turquoise/etc. shades as blue). After numerous comments
about the "blue" or "green" guitar, Julia Ecklar (who should produce
some more tapes, dammit! :-) ) suggested teal (as I think was noted in
the song). Some people (including me) weren't familiar with the
color, and Julia explained that it was "the color of the back of a
duck's head." (According to the OED, a teal is a kind of duck which
gave its name to the color.) If nothing else, the incident ensured
that I would never forget what "teal" meant.
BTW, does anyone know the name of the Man with the Teal
Guitar? Is he (or his guitar) still around?
