I come from England,  and snow on the ground was part and parcel 
of Xmas for me;   Auckland, New Zealand's typical Festival is 
built on last-minute shopping in a hot and humid frenzy, a super- 
quiet Day,  a king-sized roast meal at mid-day completed with 
steam pud and much drink - stubby beer is good.   A sleepy 
recovery at a local beach is mandatory,  a pile of pink seals 
getting sunburnt whilst the young discovery new uses for the new 
presents.  The evening meal is usually another full Xmas do - at 
somebody else's place,  involving enormous barbecue machines and 
small barrels of beer,  oldtime movies on TV and the occasional 
disaster....  NZ saves its most dramatic for Xmas day.


So,  yesterday's Xmas surprise was hail !   Not quite snow,  but 
enough of it to coat our lawns with white cold ice.  Family went 
beserk,  and the cats came in to accuse me of playing tricks on 
them...

Its a day or two short of Xmas,  but the effect has been magical.  
I've laid out my shorts -  the consequence will be 3 or 4 days of 
100% humidity as our summer sun vaporises the lot.
