Type I diabetes is caused by either no insulin or insufficient amounts of
insulin being produced.

Type II diabetes (which I have) is caused by insulin resistance, IOW the insulin
is there but for some reason it no longer causes the body to properly process blood
sugar.  Blood sugar level goes up, pancreas produces more insulin and eventually
wears out from overwork and stops.  Thus far mine is controlled with medication,
one each of two pills a day; and that is holding my blood sugar to right around 100
or a bit less.  I don't think they know why this occurs.
