JC> Oh yeah, defintely.. i dont take it as a personal attack. :) I know
JC> how to handle constructive criticism. :)

JC> It will end up being my own game. The thing is, I have been playing
JC> BRE for YEARS, and there are a few bugs in the game, and a few things
JC> that could make it exciting.

But your only recreating the wheel. Doing a BRE clone is in itself
a bre clone. Not a original idea. What make BRE so successful
was it was unique. Same with other games. It was their game.
This is why clones of games like Lore for AB, OOII to Lod,
Lord clones to lord aren't as popular. Been there done that.

JC> My idea was this. Start it off just like BRE to make it 32bit and
JC> multi-user, then from there build it out. More different styles of
JC> military, different types of attacks, and so on. The thing is, no one
JC> right now is supporting the current game, which is my motivation. I
JC> have always supported every bit of software i ever wrote, and still do.
JC> I have sold software on the market and have made an excess of 35
 JC> grand.

I don't doubt your skills. I've been programming for over 20 years
and made enough to buy 3 houses. But its a matter of uniqueness.
If you make it different even down to the menus and names that's
     better than nothing.

JC> I wanted to start off as a BRE clone so that way people that are used
JC> to be BRE can be comfortable with IPR (InterPlanetary Realms). This
JC> way, people will play and get used to the game, and as i take people
JC> suggestions and ideas, the game will continue to develop and become
 JC> even more exciting..

Cool. Its one thing to build a user base from previous software.
But you look at the industry. Windows. Its got to the point
to where its uniform so much that everyone pretty much HAS
to do that style which is why so many hate it. But then there
are folks who do other OSes like linux and become unique
from ground up. Be that way with the bre clone.

JC> As it stands the game is very predictable and you know if you do
JC> something whats going to happen.. There aren't very many variables in
JC> place. All the strageies have been figured out, and in the leagues
JC> that i play, we play the same way every time.. not very much different.

JC> I'm just trying to spice it up a little bit. :)

     Good luck.

Another factor a door author today sadly has to consider is
is it worth it? Look at the whole of BBSes. I've been
around for 15 plus years and seen the zenith of it. ITs
obviously down hill now and declining. So one has to decide
if the user base is there. The major factors is if your
doing it for the money then forget it theres not enough
user base left. If your doing it for the hobby money and
for what's left then by all means go for it. But the days
of making somewhat a liing in doors is gone.
