BG>> OS/2 is next to hopeless for GM support, although I run my Roland GT>Thanks for your suggestion Bill, are any of these cards able to play the GT>GM music used in dos games under OS/2 ? GT>As in Doom where music is General Midi and sound effects are in FM . I notice Bill made a suggestion that you probably need to install MMOS/2. If you _ONLY_ want to use your sound card for running DOS games (and that's all I use mine for, and that almost never anyway - I prefer to play Marathon on my Macintosh 8-) then you are best to install MMOS/2 then remark out EVERYTHING except the .SYS driver for the card (the reason you may need to leave this driver in is because some cards don't exist until they've been inited by a driver, and it's friendlier to use the OS/2 driver than the DOS driver in a VDM). In this configuration, your DOS games will get unrestricted access to the audio hardware and you won't experience the performance hit sustained by those games bonking the hardware through a VDD. My work machine uses a Vibra 16. I get YM3812 and OPL3 music out of the games which of course I never, ever run anywhere near that machine. (But anyway, there's my Performa 5200CD next to that machine, and Marathon, Marathon 2, and Marathon Infinity, Star Trek Judgment Rites, and more... ;-) My BBS machine uses a PAS16. When I get frustrated with what I'm doing on my notebook, I fire up Extreme Pinball, Machine Heads, et al on the BBS and release some tension. Again, I get OPL3 music out of that (and 16-bit stereo PCM effects). BTW, Doom uses FM for music and PCM for audio, just like other games. There are very few games that simulate effects in FM, because it's CPU-intensive. The only one I can think of off the top of my head is Another World. -- Lewin A.R.W.
