SWIFTWATER, Pa., Sept. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- In response to media inquiries,
Connaught Laboratories, Inc., manufacturers of IPOL(R), the sole licensed
enhanced inactivated polio vaccine in the U.S., issued the following
statement.
 
We are pleased that the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC)
has accepted the recommendations from its Advisory Committee on
Immunization Practices (ACIP) to change the schedule for U.S. polio
immunization.  The new schedule recommends the use of enhanced
Inactivated Polio Vaccine (eIPV) for the first two doses of the polio
series followed by two doses of Oral Polio Vaccine (OPV).  An all-eIPV or
all-0PV schedule are also acceptable alternatives.  With this policy
change, the CDC is helping fulfill the vision
of a polio free America first seen by scientific pioneer Jonas Salk.
 
 IPOL is an inactivated injectable vaccine that provides active
protection against poliomyelitis.  IPOL is as effective as the oral
vaccine in preventing polio in both children and adults and is indicated
for administration to those who may be at risk of paralysis associated
with the live oral poliovirus vaccine.
 
Connaught is prepared to work closely with the CDC, health care
providers, and others in the immunization community to ensure that
parents and physicians have as much information as possible during the
transition to the new schedule.  Connaught has adequate supplies of IPOL,
a licensed eIPV vaccine, to implement the new schedule in the United
States.
