CHARGES DISMISSED
On Thursday, May 14, U.S. District Judge Edward Lodge dismissed
involuntary manslaughter charges against FBI sharpshooter Lon
Horiuchi, according to an AP report. Horiuchi is the sniper who
fired the shot that killed Vicki Weaver, wife of Randy Weaver,
during the siege of the Weaver cabin in Ruby Ridge, Idaho, in
August of 1992. The federal government has already settled a
lawsuit with the Weaver family by paying a $3.1 million
settlement (your tax dollars), and a similar suit for $10 million
is still pending, brought by Kevin Harris, who was wounded by
Horiuchi during the siege. The Judge, however, stated that "Mr.
Horiuchi did no more than what was 'necessary and proper' to
carry out his duties" under the circumstances. Judge Lodge's
decision, though, should not be considered an acquittal of
Horiuchi on this issue, as the decision merely barred the state
of Idaho from prosecuting Horiuchi. Judge Lodge did go on to say
that his order was "not to be construed as a finding by this
court as to whether or not Mr. Horiuchi should be charged with a
federal crime" or that it constituted a finding "of (his) guilt
or innocence." Boundary County (Id.) Prosecutor Denise Woodbury,
who brought the charges against Horiuchi, stated that she would
need to review the decision before deciding whether there would
be an appeal.
PRIMARY ELECTIONS TUESDAY, MAY 19
Arkansas, Oregon, and Pennsylvania are holding primary elections
this Tuesday, so remember to make it to the polls to vote if you
are a registered voter in any of these states. The NRA-Political
Victory Fund has endorsed a number of candidates for these
elections -- too many to list them all in this alert. We can,
however, let you know about some of the federal races. In
Oregon, Greg Waldon has been endorsed in the Republican primary
for Congressional District (CD) 2. In Pennsylvania, NRA-PVF has
endorsed the following candidates; Charlie Dougherty (R-CD 3);
Joe Schiaffino (R-CD 8); Rep. Bud Shuster (R-CD 9); Don Sherwood
(R-CD 10); Jonathan Newman (R-CD 13); Craig Stephens (R-CD 18);
and Rep. Bill Goodling (R-CD 19). For additional information on
the primaries on Tuesday, please call the Grassroots Division at
1-800-392-8683. Since primary elections usually have low voter
turnouts, your vote can really make the difference. Be sure to
go to the polls on Tuesday and support the candidates that
support the Second Amendment!
A LOOK AT THE STATES
ALASKA: While the Primary elections are still months away, we
wanted to let you know that, among the pro-gun candidates seeking
the Republican Party's nomination for Governor, is Member of
NRA's Board of Directors and Life Member Wayne Anthony Ross.
Please keep this in mind when you go to the polls on Tuesday,
August 25.
CALIFORNIA: The Senate this week approved SB 1500, which would
ban affordable self-defense handguns, on a 21-16 vote. Senator
Bruce McPherson (R-15) was the 21st vote on the roll call. Last
year a similar measure, SB 500, was approved by the legislature
but was vetoed by the Governor. Also this week in Sacramento,
the battle over so called "assault weapons" raged on with Senator
Steve Peace (D-40) amending SB 63, which now contains the same,
if not more, restrictive language as AB 23. In a procedural move
designed to force Governor Wilson's hand, the bills will be
pushed in both houses. It's more important than ever to contact
your Assembly Member at (916) 445-3614, and your State Senator
at (916) 445-4251, to urge their opposition on both AB 23 and AB
63! Stay tuned for a special fax alert on Monday announcing some
of the NRA-PVF's endorsements for the June 2 primary elections!
