Hi DaveG,
I've purchased both Tse 4.0 GUI and Tse 4.0 Console.
The GUI version is the one to get, but there are
still uses in scripting that I use the Console version.
For example, I use JP Software's superb command
shells 4NT and Take Command (and 4Dos) to generate
a list of files matching certain specifications, such
as the list of files on drives matching wildcards modified
within a range of days, or a list of files in size ranges.
Then I call the Tse Console with a macro to execute
(using -eMacro command line) to process the list,
eliminating duplicates, adding quotes around filenames
with embedded spaces, etc. The file is saved, TSE
exits, and the 4NT / Take Command batch resumes.
When running compilers and command line stuff, the
GUI version launches new consoles to process Dos
commands, which is output to a temporary file and
imported into the editor. The console version does
not (usually) start new console windows.
Unfortunately I still need Tse 3.0 Console for its support
for DOS printers, especially the HP LaserJet 4 and HP
Deskjet printers. Yes, these work fine under Windows,
but I haven't figured how to command the Windows
printer drivers to perform certain functions, such as
pagination the way I want it for music lyric and chord
files. For example, "American Pie" MUST be printed
64 lines per page.
That said, the GUI version is terrific for its font
support, resizeable windows, mouse wheel, and
drag and drop file loading. (I never did get
PKraemer's DRAGDROP.S to work under Windows
9x. It did work under NT though).
For Unix, then Linux, I wrote an EMACS configuration
file that remapped the keyboard for Tse-like
functions. (Quite) A few hours spent reading the
EMACS help is time well spent. VI was OK for
little tasks, but EMACS is a really good reason
why Sammy should NOT try to implement Tse
under Linux.
But I was happiest when I could edit across a
network using Tse 2.8, because I could work faster.
Steve
