The central North Island here has several volcanic peaks that
support a ski field or two, surrounded by a desert plateau mostly
utilised by our Army for training purposes. The main State
Highway runs through the centre, under the peaks (Ruapehu,
Nguarahoe and Tongariro) ... and this attracts snow in the cold
months of July, August and September.

People using this highway infrequently (holidayers usually) do the
most extrordinary things when they meet snow, slush or ice for the
first time; I once found myself on the end of a halted queue of
cars in a light fall, overtook some ten of them and found the
lead vehicle moving at a walking pace, preceded by a worried
passenger with a stick prodding at perhaps 2 inches of fresh
snow...

DC> Some nice tropical warmth would be nice about now :)

Just survived a day of very hot temperatures helping out the local
school's return from camping activities - I'd have cheerfully sent
you the whole shebang if I could have !

:-)
