Dear All
I know this isn't supposed to be an Agony Aunt colunm, but here goes nevertheless:
Have perservered with a bog-standard 16-bit soundcard for about the last
week. Purchased at no-name Computer Store in Suburbs.
I purchased under the condition that I could take the bloody thing back if
between the BBS and the various OS/2 sources, I couldn't find a driver.
Note that W95 and DOS drivers were avail with the card.
MY system: Clone P-120, 2 x 4 Mb simms on Intel Triton MB
Boot Man: DOS 6.22 on primary, OS/2 Red v3 on D logical
partition.
IDE CD-ROM, 8 x I think. Brand probably Wearnes.
THE STORY SO FAR: The OS would not recognise it as a Soundblaster. Silly
me, I thought by sticking to a name brand that I would have no trouble with
drivers, but I now doubt that the word 'Soundblaster' actually means
anything.
The DOS drivers will not install - but who cares? It is from scouring th
e disks that I note the install software speaks of Vibra 16. It asks me to
install my DOS drivers in a \VIBRA16 subdir.
OS/2 recognises the card and installs the standard SB16D2.SYS drivers into
CONFIG.SYS. I know this will not work, at least it hasn't before, and
conver the name of SB16D2 to VIBR16D2 as per the Vibra16 README.TXT.
As at right now, I have no idea what to do next. I look at my system setup
icon, and it doesn't seem to see the new Vibra driver as anything. My acid
test of the soundcard is to try and play a music CD in the drive - so far
no result.
I am a bee's whatever from chucking this in and either a) forcing my
Computer Salesperson to get a card I can actually deal with; or b) selling
the machine and converting to the cult of Macintosh.
Please advise, if possible. Regards,
TD
