This is cute, but I'm going to chime in with Gary, just for
gold-plated redundancy's sake. Which is to say, I'd like
to make the point a little differently, in hopes that one
of multiple data streams will make sense. Please do not take
this as an attempt to gang up on you, okay?

This is the bit I most think needs to have addressed.
Fandom (the culture, the floor wax, the dessert topping...collect
the set) is not a closed system. Like-minded people are *entirely*
welcome in, welcome to find their own level of participation, their
own preferred subculture. New people are kewl. But new people
are still *new*. That's okay. Everyone is at some point or other.
It just means that there is a bunch of shared knowledge they don't
have yet, namely fannish *culture* (in the anthropoligical sense).
And that's okay too. It's just sometimes useful, for the purpose
of discussion, to be able to point to that distinction. We don't
mean that because there is a distinction to be made one class of
people are better than the other, just that there are two (entirely
mobile) classes one can distinguish. Making distinctions isn't
about putting people down, it's just about speaking more precisely.
Which is a fairly fannish obsession to have.
HTH...
