You might look at inverters.  They take 12VDC and
change it to 110VAC.  You can get them from 100 watts
(which will run a small TV and VCR) up to units that
will run the entire house (used in solar homes with
banks of batteries).
A 500W like I have now should run between $100 and
$150.  It won't run the fridge but It will run enough
things to keep life livable for quite a while and I can
run it off the car..
