On Sun Mar 29, Pete Granzeau said to Bill Escue:
-PG>The "Jeeps" you are talking about are not the original Willys design,
-PG>they
-PG>are a later design from Ford. They had 4-wheel independent
-PG>suspension,
-PG>using a swing axle (the same kind that made the early Corvairs
-PG>unsafe).
-PG>The Army managed to kill and maim a lot of soldiers who thought they
-PG>could
-PG>drive them on the highway at speed, just like a car (or a civilian
-PG>Jeep),
-PG>and ended up rolling them over in a corner. In a convoy, they were
-PG>limited
-PG>to convoy speed, usually 45 mph. The army also put low speed limits
-PG>on
-PG>them and put out a lot of warnings to drivers about the problem, as
-PG>well.
-PG>Soldiers can be made to drive government vehicles carefully. It ain't
-PG>so
-PG>easy with a civilian population.
Some guys in my old national guard unit managed to roll an M151 on a dirt
road doing about 30. The fender landed on one guys head and put a big dent in
the fender, and burst a bunch of blood vessels in his eyeballs, but
fortunately didn't mash his head.
