Hello Thom.
29 Feb 08 13:44, you wrote to me:
TL> Jeff Smith wrote in a message to Thom LaCosta:
JS>> Ummm.. Thom. You are the one that brought this subject up.
JS>> Remember? I had simply asked a general question about the Elist.
JS>> You chose to approach me here and broach the subject. Let's not
JS>> try to twist things around ok?
TL> Gee, didn't look that way to me.
Who initiated this dialog between you and I?
JS>> Are you capable of receiving updates via direct crash
JS>> netmail?
TL> No, and that has been general knowledge for a while.
True Thom, that fact has been known for some time now. That is the
reason people have had to look at other less desirable paths to use to
send in their updates. Direct netmail is the prefered method based on
those that I have talked to.
JS>> Given the security concerns that many/most might have.
TL> And the concerns are what? That someone could hijack their echo? That
TL> might be a valid point IF there was not a human echolist keeper.
JS>> communication in Fidonet and most other FTN's that you would

JS>> would seem that if your goal was to make the Elist available to
JS>> all you would make the Elist available via as many paths of
JS>> communication as possible. But hey, maybe thats just me.
TL> I have made the echolist avalaible via netmail and email....
What about those that don't have (easy) access to email capabilities
or for security and realiability concerns choose not use routed netmail?
JS>>> To me that says that your interest in
JS>>> the maintenance of the Elist is diminishing.
TL> You are entitled to your opinin...which doesn;t mean that it is an
TL> accurate depiction of anythin other than your opinion.
Agreed. I tend to observe what people say, how they say it, and how
they act while saying it. That type of thing. Then base my opinion on
what I observe.
TL>> How would you know? I don't recall submitting logs to you.
JS>> Not needed Thom. You have expressed your discontent with
JS>> people, and Fidonet a number of times. People have gotten a fair
JS>> sense of how you feel from your own posts and words.
TL> Yes...and I have expressed my discontent with the folks who run my
TL> neighborhood association....and in spite of that, I still testify
TL> before city agencies, I still get appointed to task forces and local
TL> elected officials still solicit my comments...which tells me that
TL> being a known discontented person doesn't disqualfy me from performing
TL> various duties.
And it shouldn't. My point was that people react to you and form
opinions of you based on what and how you articulate. Also based on your
actions.
JS>>> In preperation for the task of maintaining the/an Elist. I
JS>>> registered a domain name (ECHOLIST.ORG) and setup a website to
JS>>> support and provide HTTP access to the Elist.
TL>> You could always do what I did.....put it up and see if it's
TL>> used.... But I suspect you would feel more comfortable doing that
TL>> after you've whipped up the troops a bit more.
JS>> Actually that was my first intention. I made the decision to
JS>> wait awhile after talking to Janis. In either case I also wanted
JS>> to talk to you prior to making it public. But you chose to make
JS>> it public here.
TL> Ahm, you chose to put out feelers here....please be accurate.
If by "feelers" you mean that I chose to ask questions of anyone
about their feelings and/or concerns regarding the Elist and if they
felt that it was still necessary? Then yes I did. It only seemed logical
to me to find out prior to launching the project if there was enough
desire and support for it.
TL> Basewd on your actions, I have no comfort level that you would have
TL> been forthright and contacted me.
Then you would be wrong Thom. In fact I had started an email yesterday
to you. Hopefuly I will get time to finish it tonight and send it out. I
would have prefered that we had started off privately. But for some reason
you decided to start the discussion here.
TL> I can tell you that over the years each person who attempted to
TL> subvert the echolist, its keeper has failed....
People will go with who ever thay feel best about. That is a given.
TL> Who knows, maybe your attempt will succeed....I'll wait and see.
