I visited my best friend this weekend and he still takes the Sporting News.
While I was there he started talking about this idiot who now covers the NFL
for them, T.J. Simers (I'm guessing that T.J. stands for Toe Jam). I read 3
weeks of his report and came away with the impression that there aren't many
QBs today that he likes and he certainly has a strange sense of "worth."
An example of that last statement was his diatribe against the Cowboys and
their willingness to sign Moose while letting Boniol get away (His take was
that Moose was a buddy of Aikman's and Boniol wasn't so that's why the Pokes
kept him and not Boniol). If you look at what Boniol did last year, there's
nothing that he did that was so exceptional that he couldn't be replaced by
another kicker unless it came to the length of his kickoffs. Dallas didn't
score much but most of his field goals could have been made by a lot of
kickers in the league. When Dallas goes out looking for another kicker this
year, expect them to make their final decision about who to keep based on
that person's kickoff yardage. Should Dallas' offensive line stay healthy
this year, their kicker should be getting more extra points than field goals
and Moose's blocking ability will be more important inside the 20 than
Boniol's ability to make a 29-yard gimmee (Boniol attempted 96 extra points
and 57 field goals in his first 2 seasons and 25 extra points and 36 field
goals last year).
Don't get the impression that I'm going after him because of what he's said
about the Cowboys because he's said things about other teams that has me
laughing. It makes me realize that I haven't missed a thing when I gave up
reading TSN several years ago. If only I had the money to start a competing
publication. TSN has fallen quite a bit from what it used to be.
