I can help a little, I am a physicist who is working on problems in
bio-medicine and bio-engineering. I had polio in the late 40's and have
had a bout with PPS which I keep under control (so far) by exercise.

My research is in area related to human and machine/robot vison. One
problem we are currently working on a machine to design prostheses by
observing the "good" limb and designing a matching limb. Hopefully no one
on this list has a scarcity of limbs and needs this! Another research area
is measurement of extremity mobility by digital imagery - in normal
English, we use a digital camera to take a picture of a limb being moved to
its limit, and use a computer to measure the movement angle. It turns out
that while an individual therapist can get good repeatability on his/her
measurements, different therapists don't get the same measurement on the
same patient. We hope to use the system we are building not only to help
train therapists but also to supply photographic documentation of
disability and improvement to our friends, the insurance industry. We are
also working on computer administered tests for various eye diseases. If
anyone is interested in this research, or hopefully for me has an idea
where we can get additional financial support for the research (unpaid
advertisement), please let me know - please respond by email, since I don't
catch all the responses in the listserv.....Joel
