CONNECTICUT: As early as Monday , the full House of
Representatives, will consider HB 5746, the "Lawler anti-gun
bill," which includes such items as mandatory trigger locks on
all guns sold or transferred, handgun tracing and a $24 fee for
mandatory FBI fingerprint checks in order to obtain a carry
permit or certificate of eligibility. Additionally, the sponsor
of this bill, during a press conference yesterday with Jim Brady,
announced his intention to add language that would give the
police, your neighbors and doctors the authority to have you
committed for psychiatric evaluation just because they may
consider you a threat. Please call your Representatives first
thing Monday morning at (800) 842-1420 for Democrats and (800)
842-1421 for Republicans and urge them to vote "NO" on HB 5746.
If your Representative tells you he or she is undecided, p lease
call back until you get an answer. It is imperative that we keep
the press on until the legislature adjourns on May 6.
COLORADO: On Tuesday, April 28, the Denver City Council will hold
a public hearing on ordinance 37-50, which allows the city of
Denver to confiscate your automobile, if your have a gun in your
car, even if you are carrying that gun legally under state law.
This ordinance was first approved as a test ordinance, by the
City Council, in February of 1997 and was expected to sunset
August 1, 1998. The purpose of Tuesday's hearing is to extend or
make the ordinance permanent. Please make plans to attend the
hearing from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in the Gates Room of the
Denver Central Library, located at 1357 Broadway in Denver.
Citizens will be given an opportunity to address the committee.
On a good note, last week Governor Roy Romer (D) signed HB 1170,
the NRA-backed Range Protection bill and HB 1376, the Crime
Victims Protection Act.
GEORGIA: On Tuesday, April 21, Governor Zell Miller (D) signed HB
1360, a bill clarifying that permit holders could transport a
handgun anywhere within their vehicle and granting immunity from
prosecution to gun owners who defend themselves against violent
intruders in their place of business or vehicles.
VIRGINIA: Earlier this week, the Prince William County Board of
Supervisors voted 5-3 to defeat an attempt to close indoor
shooting ranges and place limits on FFL's within the county. A
big thanks go out to all NRA members who showed up and voiced
their opposition to these two ordinances.
