NRA-ILA TAKES ON UNITED NATIONS...AGAIN!
NRA-ILA Executive Director Tanya Metaksa will be delivering
a major speech to a key United Nations meeting on Monday, April
27th -- don't expect your chief lobbyist to pull any punches! In
Vienna, Austria, Mrs. Metaksa will be addressing the U.N.
Commission on Crime Prevention & Criminal Justice which is
considering regulating the lawful use of guns and ammunition on
an international scale. Among the schemes under review by the
Commission: the sharp curtailment of hunting; establishing a
"need" as a prerequisite to gun possession; an upper-age limit on
gun ownership; and much, much more! Despite closed-door
meetings, secret documents, and backroom deals, the U.N. has seen
its "gun control" proposals defeated by NRA-ILA repeatedly. Most
significantly, NRA-ILA defeated a joint initiative by Canada and
Japan to establish a sweeping U.N. convention condemning private
firearms ownership worldwide. Mrs. Metaksa will be announcing
NRA's intention to launch an initiative of our own -- namely,
sweeping reforms of the U.N. itself which are aimed at opening
closed meetings and freeing "secret files." NRA members, she
will tell the Commission, "might put it this way: we want open,
honest debate. We want freedom of information. We like town
meetings, and we love democracy. And we think, in expressing
those values, we have a lot of company worldwide." Copies of
this major address will be available through NRA-ILA Grassroots
Division, Monday, April 27. Call 800/392-8683 for your copy.
EXPANDING THEIR GLOBAL ASSAULT ON FIREARMS
If there was ever any doubt that the Clinton-Gore
Administration is the most anti-gun team to occupy the White
House this country has ever seen, their actions over the last
several months have them firmly entrenched in the "Anti-Gun Hall
of Shame." First, they went after the importation of several
semi-automatic firearms, all of which were completely legal to
import under their own gun ban from the 1994 Crime Act. Their
Bigger Gun Ban (see FAX Alert, Vol. 5 Nos. 13 & 15) now prohibits
the importation of 58 firearm models. Moving to the next level,
they are currently reaching across the Atlantic to further spread
the seeds of their anti-gun agenda. According to the April 23
edition of the New York Times, the Clinton-Gore Administration is
in the process of revoking all pending licenses for exporting
American-made firearms to British companies. Once again,
attacking perfectly legal activities, this action shows that
Clinton-Gore Administration will use whatever powers they have to
crush the lawful trade in firearms. This is merely another step,
in this administration's global agenda. Officials for the White
House have stated that the ultimate goal is to halt the sale of
American-made firearms to all members of the European Union -- a
total of 15 countries. According to a senior State Department
official, Germany will likely be the next target for prohibiting
American firearms manufacturers' exports. France and Italy also
appear to be high on the Clinton-Gore hit-list. Today, however,
the State Department is backing away from that report. While the
State Department issued a limited denial, past experience shows
that leaks are often more reliable than later official statements
-- so American gun owners need to be prepared for an all-out
effort to ensure that the administration doesn't impose its will
on the shooting sports worldwide.
Next month, at a meeting of the 8 major industrial powers,
referred to as the Group of 7 plus Russia, it is expected that
new regulations on importing and exporting firearms will be
adopted. Although the regulations would restrict just eight
countries, they include the five largest arms-producing nations,
which account for 90% of firearms exports. All these proposals
are consistent with other international groups' attempts to
restrict guns, including a campaign by disarmament groups to
target small arms on a worldwide scale. As these stories
continue to develop, we will continue to alert you to what is
happening, and what can be done to object to these actions.
RIGHT TO CARRY CHAMPIONED
In his new book, More Guns, Less Crime: Understanding Crime
and Gun Control Laws, Professor John R. Lott, Jr., expands on his
ground-breaking study, Crime, Deterrence, and Right-To-Carry
Concealed Handguns, and reaffirms what NRA has been saying for
years -- allowing law-abiding citizens to carry concealed
firearms is a crime deterrent. Professor Lott, the John M. Olin
Visiting Law and Economics Fellow at the University of Chicago
School of Law, based his analysis on crime data for all 3,054
counties in the United States, spanning 18 years. This
meticulously detailed look at the decline in violent crime in
relation to "shall issue" concealed carry laws is a must read!
More Guns, Less Crime is published by the University of Chicago
Press and you may order your copy today by calling 800/621-2736.
