 PH> Oh, I know. I'm not a CW geek. I like to know it's there whenever I
PH> get around to improving my speed (currently about 15 wpm).

Right today, as I read this, I finished repairs to a MaCalley key.
and another straight key, and one of those old Heathkit CW amps you
put together.

PH> Agreed. Many equate "can" with "should". It's
not always the case.

   Yeah...Been there...done that, got burned...learned lesson.

PC> Anyone can run a commercial radio converted for use in the Amateur
 PC> Service.
PH> Fair enough. What the rules were designed to prevent were yahoos
PH> without test equipment disturbing meese with spurious emissions (except
PH> during mating season). Rigs commercially designed to operate on amateur
PH> frequencies (i.e. programmable rather than crystal-controlled) can be
PH> run by basic qualification holders because the front-end does not need
PH> to be adjusted. Anything that needs to be twiddled should be operated
PH> by an advanced-qualification holder, in case something goes wrong (they
PH> should know what the problem is and can fix it). My interpretation, but
PH> borne up by others. What is the resonant frequency of a full antler
 PH> rack, anyway?

As I said that, I noted a commercial grade site screwing up a
repeater, south of me. The users and the club were chatting about
it and well they are right traced the signal...So much for all that
regulations stuff...Industry is out to invade the bands.

I will tell you the freq of a antler rack if you give me the tree
resonant frequencys that the Ozzies used? It will spare you possible
deer attack or better still meeting a moose and having a real rack
to look at .

 PH> I don't know. Not sure if I want a basic-only without electronics
PH> training fiddling with anything important. Makes the rest of us look
PH> bad. (Of course, there is the "self-correcting error" factor -- guy
PH> tweaking his kW amp with the power on -- but I digress. ;-) )

I remember a very advanced hammie doing that one night....Only while
he was checking the connections between the warrior amp and the TX he
sneezed and well the VOX gave him the RF burns. The smartest thing
he did however was right after he pulled off his "dummy-tech award"
sneeze and yell..he shutup and didn't get a second RF burn.

Yes..It was funny, and we had to explain it at the hospital, as well
to family. We all can laugh now...but it does happen.

PC> 160? As in 160meters? Okay... can you give a frequency on
PC> 160meters? I haven't been on 160meters after my pal in Barrie, Ontario
 PC> became a silent key VE3AL .

 PH> I don't have enough swamp for 160M. I can put up a 40 without a
PH> compromise, but that's it. There are a few LF and beacon-chasers in
PH> Ottawa, however -- lots of the right kind of land for those kinds of
 PH> antennas.

Aaaah yes..noted that on the way to Bancroft.

PH> I am hoping that HF without Morse will at least get more operators
PH> into the service (they can learn code later). There are a lot more SKs
PH> than I am comfortable with -- need to be bringing them in fresh at the
 PH> other end.
PH> 73, and my best for the New Year.

You too....Post New Years greetings. I would like to hear more
great chats on there, but all there is, is nets...short chats...then
one is chased off...and the rest wait for someone else. Seems a waste.
I enjoy a chat...

PH> ... Korman's conclusion: The trouble with resisting temptation is it
PH> may never come your way again.

Hope we chat on the air...We need some more people on there!
