I didn't either, until I reccently tried out REALbasic.  I'm in love :)

The ASCII is all about encoding, and it's a real bitch to get it to work
right, so what I've done instead of trying to deal with that is just working
with the absolute byte values.

With that decided, it's a simple matter of using a bitmapped VGA font to
display the range of old PC ASCII characters.

Of course, not the most elegant solution, but it's the only one guaranteed to
show exactly what I want to see.
