I recommend a combination of the two.  I'm finally reaching a happy medium in
wearing my braces part of the time and using the wheelchair part of the time.
I've been fighting this for several years now and am about to get it worked
out.  I'm in the process of setting up my life where I can stay in the w/c
all the time if necessary, but am reserving the braces for special
times/things.
I've worn 2 full length leg braces for 50 years now and it's getting more and
more difficult all the time.  I'm too heavy for the plastic ones and even
have trouble keeping the stainless steel ones from breaking.  The expense of
repairing/replacing braces along with the pain from wearing them all my life
has gradually moved me toward the wheelchair.  It's been more of a mental
battle with myself than anything else.  But, I'm finally coming around.
