It's not very scalable if it's not multi-tier.  The only SQL-based servers
I know of that aren't multi-tier are for PDAs and Java (the latter being
Cloudscape).

Given the plethora of databases, if I were writing something in C, C++,
Perl, or generally even Java, I'd be using multi-tier, even if it's all the
same computer (both client & server on the same machine).
