Yes, I almost wrote a reply similar to yours, but I was too unsure about
the meaning of "cstring". itoa() isn't standard, either (though atoi() is).

Anyway, the big question for me is, why store these numbers as ASCII at
all? Why not store them as ints (or floats, if necessary), and only convert
once on input and once on output? That would seem more efficient.
