subject: bullet weight tradeoffs

Dunno if this got out the first time, there seems to have been a glitch...

I went out to buy ammo a few years back, and in 9mm there were only a
couple of choices around here at that point in time. It was either 115gr
hardball, or 147gr hollowpoints, in a number of different brands.

Looking at what's out there in the past couple of days, I'm seeing for the
first time that there are hollowpoints available in a number of different
weights, the heaviest being 147gr but there also being a number of
different lighter loads available, maybe 3 or 4 of them altogether.

So what are the tradeoffs involved here? Lighter seems to me like it'd go
faster, but I don't know how that would affect expansion in a desired
target (I'm considering this particular ammo for defense carry), and don't
know how any of this would affect the possibility of overpenetration in
indoor circumstances.

Can any of you guys fill me in on what the tradeoffs are with these choices?
