RJT>RJT>VH> Silhouette targets are in two different categories --
"Silhouette
RJT>RJT>VH> Matches" are shot at heavy metal silhouettes of
game animals, the
RJT>RJT>VH> rule being you must knock the silhouette down to score."

RJT>RJT>I've seen pictures of those in magazines, that's the ones I'm
RJT>RJT>thinking of.

RJT>VH> That's a fairly specialized game -- most pistol Silhouette shooters
RJT>VH> use a heavy revolver, or single-shot pistol.

RJT>Yes? Any particular ones? Calibers? I seem to remember different shapes
RJT>being associated with different calibers at different ranges, but it's bee
RJT>while since I saw that article.

Silhouette (Silhuette Mexicana, or Mexican Silhouettes) are shot with
rifles, pistols, and .22s.

The targets are a grouse ("chicken"), a Javalina
("pig"), a turkey and a
desert sheep ("ram"). The targets are set up in banks of five, and the
contestant shoots two banks of each type. In international competition,
you shoot four banks.

Targets must be shot in order -- if you hit the third one when aiming at
the second, it doesn't count. Targets are made of heavy steel, with
steel bases and must be knocked down to count.

The range and size of the targets varies with the weapon. For rifles,
and full power handguns, life size targets are used. For rifles, the
grouse are set at 100 meters, the javalinas at 200, the turkeys at 300
and the sheep at 400. All shots are from the standing, unsupported
position.

For full power handguns, the ranges are reduced by a half -- grouse at
50 meters, rams at 200.

For .22s, the target sizes are reduced -- the ram is about the size of a
squirrel. The grouse are shot at 25 meters, the javalina at 50, turkeys
at 75 and rams at 100.

RJT>RJT>Watching those folks was downright scary! Some kinda state workers.

RJT>VH> Everyone was a beginner once -- why not take them under your wing
RJT>VH> and give them a little coaching?

RJT>What was scary was that they thought they already knew enough about what th
RJT>were doing... :-0

There have been scientific tests that show that incompetent people are
incompetent because they are not competent enough to know how
incompetent they are. :-)

RJT>I heard mention tonight about state workers and besides law enforcement (wh
RJT>these people weren't) they mentioned "domestic relations"
workers, which I
RJT>thinking is probably what these people were.

RJT>I did get out to the range today, anyhow. After *way* too long. And I
RJT>managed to make some holes in some paper, along with making a bunch of hol
RJT>in those small aluminimum pie plates. And blew one of them clean off the
RJT>boards. :-) I'd forgotten what a wonderful smell that powder burning was.

RJT>Oh, and there were all these necked-down rimfire brass cases all over the
RJT>place. *LOTS* of it. And, remember when I was wondering what that stuff
RJT>good for, what was it, .177 or something? Well, I got my answer today--
RJT>target boards had a whole *mess* of popped baloonns up there.

RJT>I guess now I know what they're good for. :-)

Those are the new .17 Hornady Magnum Rimfire -- the latest thing.
They're selling like hotcakes.
