                       A LOOK AT THE STATES
CALIFORNIA: As early as Monday, the Assembly is expected to
consider AB 23, the bill that seeks to replace the Roberti-Roos
Assault Weapons Control Act with language defining so-called
"assault weapons," rather than listing prohibited firearms by
name. Please keep contacting your Assembly Members at
916/445-3614 urging them to oppose AB 23. Also, AB 2022, the
NRA-supported carry reform bill, is still waiting to be set for a
hearing. Please continue calling your legislators encouraging
them to support AB 2022.
COLORADO: Earlier this week, HB 1170, NRA-backed range
protection, passed the Senate unanimously. It now heads to the
Governor for his signature. Please call Governor Romer (D) at
303/866-2471 and politely urge him to sign HB 1170. On the
election front, get involved in the April 7 precinct caucuses.
To get involved in your local caucuses, contact your county
Political Party Headquarters or clerk and determine where your
precinct caucus will be held. It is important to attend and
either get elected as a delegate or support another pro-gun
delegate for election.
KANSAS: Last week, the State Senate unanimously approved a
resolution sponsored by Senator Tim Huelskamp (R-38), encouraging
school systems in Kansas to adopt the NRA's award-winning Eddie
Eagle Gun Safety Program. Also, HB 2886, NRA-backed range
protection, passed the House 94 to 27 on March 23. It now moves
to the Senate Federal and State Affairs Committee for
consideration. Please call your State Senators at 785/296-2391
and ask them to support HB 2886.
KENTUCKY: On Wednesday, March 25, the Senate passed HB 318, your
right to carry reform bill. It now heads back to the House for
concurrence. Please call your State Representatives at
502/564-8100 and urge them to vote to concur on HB 318.
WASHINGTON: HB 1541, NRA-supported range protection legislation,
HB 1408, which would allow Washington to recognize out-of-state
carry permits, and HB 2969, which provides an exemption from
sales tax on the purchase of a gun safe, are still pending
approval by Governor Locke (D). Please contact Governor Locke at
360/902-4111 and politely urge him to sign these bills.
WEST VIRGINIA: Currently, three important bills are pending
Governor Cecil Underwood's (R) signature: HB 4106, shooting
range protection legislation; HB 2650, the Uniform Firearms Act,
which preempts cities and counties from enacting their own gun
control laws; and HB 4296, which gives the Governor the authority
to enter into reciprocal agreements with other states regarding
recognizing right to carry permits. Once signed by the Governor,
we'll keep you posted as agreements are established.
