It is sometimes not necessary to pull the trigger.  Pulling the slide back
on a Colt .45 is scary enough and if that doesn't work, a shot in the air
will usually suffice.  It is important to know what you're up against in
that situation, so if the first two suggestions aren't going to work and
you know it, your course of action would be to fire at the brioadest part
of the body in front of you.  On that note, there are some wannabe
ballistic experts who would tell you that wouldn't knock the bad guy
backwards.
