There are alternatives.

Multimail, which is an open source offline mail reader, works with Blue
Wave.

Modern BBS software has this capability built in.  The BBS software I run,
MBSE, has Blue Wave capability.  I believe Mystic BBS has it also (I'm not
sure).

So yes, there are better alternatives out there if you look.
