Hello,
I'm a 37 year old male polio victim. I contracted in 1959, at the age
of 11 months, whilst my folks were travelling in the Middle east. Polio was
not an epidemic in that part of the globe, or so I have been told, and
therefore there was no need for any vaccinations.
At any rate, Polio has caused a great deal of emotional and physical pain
throughout my life. Riddled with paralysis from head to toe, and having to
pretend it did not exist, in order to appear normal and "fit in" consumed
so much emotional and physical effort, little was left to give to any other
meaningful pursuit in life.
Nevertheless, I got the bare minimum I needed in order to justify my
continued existence. A family to care for. This alone, has given me the
greatest happiness I could ever hope for in this life. To watch my son grow
and listen to his laughter is the greatest bliss of all. Living with Polio
has taught me just how precious our health is, and watching my son, run and
jump, full of energy, is God's greatest gift to me.
Post polio has crept up on me, and I will have to step up my efforts in
order to deal with the weakness, increasing pain and the ever present
tigue.
It's never been easy, but at least I'm not alone anymore, I have my family
and hopefully plenty of friends in this conference that can relate to me.
Let's hear from you.
