Liberal or not, she was brilliant. LIke Sergei Eisenstien, who did films for
Lenin and Co. the art transcended the politics. Leni did the same thing for
the Germans, Possibly some of the best cinematic work for it's time, if you
factor out the politics of the situation.

I've seen both works, when I was a film student, it's impressive.

But, yeah, the message did get in the way of the medium, in both cases..
