| subject: | Modem upgrade |
CH> > And if you Put a %E2 in the String the modem will Change up and Down CH> > for the line Quilty so always getting best speed for that line ;) CH> That will only work if the _other_ end also sets %E2. No, that's not so. The modem with %E1 set will still respond to rate change (up) requests - it just won't initiate them itself. We've demonstrated this well here between a 144FM and a Dataplex DPX596, the latter having finer control over retrain conditions and timeouts. The Maestro uses %E1, leaving the rate shifting initiation to the DPX596. This is no longer an issue after exchange upgrades around here, but sure was before .. CH> Most BBS's, ISP's etc would most likely set %E1 because it's the CH> most reliable. It is also NOT CH> recommended on a noisy line, because the modem will spend CH> more time retraining in order to grab the "best" line it CH> can as conditions dynamicly vary, than it does shifting CH> data. With a 15 second "dead" time for each retrain, comms CH> becomes a joke with %E2 on a noisy line....that's why CH> sysops set %E1. That was (partly) true with the older, buggier chipsets, like those in the 14400 Maestros. I say 'partly' because rate change requests are not retrains, and take only several hundred milliseconds, as opposed to the many seconds of a retrain. I'm sure the latest ones wouldn't 'hunt' nearly as readily as the older ones - which were pretty 'trigger happy' for sure.
