FLORIDA:
CONSTITUTION REVISION COMMISSION GIVES INITIAL APPROVAL
TO CRC-167: THE "LESS TIME FOR GUN CRIME" PROPOSAL
Fooling 23 of her fellow, unelected revisors of Florida's
constitution into believing she is proposing real crime control,
Katherine Rundle and the commission gave initial approval to CRC-
167 on a 24-11 vote this week. Gone is the threat of government
bureaucrats digging through personal records -- Ms. Rundle
amended the proposal to limit county waiting periods and
background checks to investigations of criminal records. But the
threat of criminals who abuse our rights spending LESS TIME
BEHIND BARS is very REAL.
CRC-167 would actually REDUCE penalties for gun trafficking and
illegal firearm sales. Penalties imposed under county ordinances
are limited to misdemeanors. Violations of state and federal
laws relating to waiting periods and firearms sales are felonies.
Passing duplicate waiting period/firearm purchase laws on the
county level will have the effect of reducing felony crimes to
misdemeanors.
Criminals who engage in gun-running or firearms sales to minors
and other prohibited individuals should be punished to the
fullest extent of the law.
But what Commissioner Rundle has proposed and what CRC-167 would
do is to give those criminals a lighter sentence!
Is that the Commission's idea of crime control???
CRC-167 does nothing more than give counties the power to enact
the same laws that already exist and already apply to firearms
sales -- including those conducted at gun shows -- at the state
and/or federal level.
If current federal and state laws relating to firearms sales are
not being enforced or applied at gun shows -- which is
Commissioner Rundle's charge -- what makes her and the commission
think that local laws will? And even if they are enforced -- what
makes her and the commission believe that "less time for gun
crime" is good public policy?
ASK THE COMMISSION MEMBERS LISTED BELOW -- URGE THOSE WHO VOTED
"FOR" CRC-167 TO RECONSIDER; THANK THOSE WHO VOTED "AGAINST" CRC-
167. Make your calls today -- the commission could reconsider
this proposal at their next meeting on Monday, March 23.
