This is not implausible; since "Bimbos" she has, at least, learned
sympathy for her "good guy" characters, as well as her "local color" and
"spear-carrier" characters. If I peer really hard, I can sense sympathy
for some of her "bad guy" characters (such as the hapless tour-guide in
"Missing Susan") as well, although that could just be me filtering
through my own nature, of course.
Also, while she may still want to be rich (heck -- so do I), her
attitude towards money does not particularly seem to infect her
characters in her most critically acclaimed novels, the Spencer
Arrowwood books (of which "If Ever I Return, Pretty Peggy-O" is the
first). Some of them are trying to get ahead, some are content with what
they have, and some are trying to better themselves other ways than
financially -- but none of them are looked down upon because they don't
drive BMWs.
Heck, Silver John the Balladeer could stroll into town, and probably
think them right nice folks (and then he'd inevitably gravitate towards
Nora's cabin and chat with the ghost).
