Dear John,
(always a great way of starting a letter ...)

I guess you have tried the other options of the Dos()
command already, with no satisfactory results?

Take this example from the Tse help file on Dos():

 SaveFile()
 Dos("CC " + CurrFilename() + " >results", _DONT_PROMPT_ |
_TEE_OUTPUT_)

/******
 Example 5
 Invoke the CC program, passing it the name of the currently
edited file (which is saved first, so that the disk copy and
what is in memory are the same), and pipe the output to the
file "results". At the same time, any piped output is also
displayed on the screen.
******/

That could be what you are looking for.
In addition, there is also the following option:

 _RUN_DETACHED_ causes cmdline to be run as a detached process

I haven't tried that one myself (lack of Windows 2k), but it
could mean that this process runs in the background, and so
does not disrupt your current screen.

Other options could be invoking the TeX compiler not directly,
but with the start /m command, or a .Pif file (if such exist
under Win 2k), which would allow some fine tuning of the Dos
Box' appearance.

>1.The process of opening up a console to run the DOS command

>the eyes.

The above failing, is there no native TeX for WinXP, WinNT, or
Win9x? Then you wouldn't have to invoke the Dos Box at all.
Perhaps there is even a Windows port of LyX, the Unix/Linux
graphical TeX environment?

In any case, everybody who does his word processing with Donald
Knuth's TeX dinosaur has my admiration,
                                       Michael.

(who only ever typeset math formulas in WordPerfect's Formula
Editor -- which was based on TeX syntax in part!)
