Fellow Users,
with the help of TSE, you can simply speed up browsing, block
unwanted ads from ever being downloaded, and avoid being
tracked on the web by the likes of Doubleclick.com cookies.
How?
Simply by editing the text file C:\Windows\hosts (Win 9x),
or C:\WinNT\system32\drivers\drivers\etc\hosts (Win 2000).
All it takes for this to work are entries like the following
added to the "hosts" file:
127.0.0.1 bfast.com
127.0.0.1 countyou.de
127.0.0.1 doubleclick.com
127.0.0.1 doubleclick.net
Such entries redirect DNS requests from the sites listed to
your own machine, which has the IP address 127.0.0.1. Unless
you are running a Domain Name Server, those requests will not
be answered, and thus no content from advertsing, banner, and
tracking sites loaded. A reboot (or Windows restart) may be
necessary after editing, to make the changes take effect.
Many precompiled lists availabe on the web at the URLs
mentioned below.
I tried it with Opera 6.05, and by looking at the cache content
before and after, could see that it really worked. No more ads
and banners from the listed sites. Also, by checking your cache
from time to time, you can spot further candidates for
blocking.
For good measure, you can change also your TCP/IP settings, and
add the 127.0.0.1 to the list of DNS to be used. But that
shouldn't be necessary in most cases.
More information for specific systems, browsers, and more
refined blocking methods are available at
