I was recently given a .22 pistol by my father in law, and am looking
for any info on it.
It looks like a "cowboy" pistol, IE, single action with a loading port
and cartridge extraction rod. It is made by H&R Inc., Model 949. The
action is actually double action, despite the appearance. My problem is,
I am not familiar with single action style revolvers, other than black
powder. On the black powder revolvers I shot, they had a "half cock"
position to turn the cylinder for loading. This revolver does not. It
has a very small half cock that seems to only pull the hammer away from
the cylinder (the firing pin is attached to the hammer) and then the
full cock position for single action operation. In both positions the
cylinder is locked.
Does anyone have an address for H&R? I would like to get a manual. The
revolver is in decent shape, just missing some bluing here and there,
but my FIL says it is a shooter. It says 22 cal on the barrel, and I
assume 22 long, but I want to be sure.
